Following the October elections, the Regional Assembly meeting on 15th November 2008 elected Mr. Radko Martinek as the new president for the period 2008 -2012.

Mr. Martínek represents Social Democrats, a winning party of the elections. Mr. Martínek has previously served as a chief magistrate, a member of Czech parliament and a minister. As a regional president he will be responsible for general development and EU funds.

Mr. Martínek was born in Brno in 1956. He received degrees from Filosofical faculty and Faculty of Science of Palacký University in Olomouc, for many years he worked as a secondary school teacher. In 1996 he joined the Social Democratic Party (ČSSD). Mr. Martínek is married and has two daughters. His hobbies include hiking, cycling, reading or cooking.
